French Polynesia Sailing Vacation

French Polynesia is one of the best sailing grounds famous for incredible oceanic wildlife, dramatic volcanic scenery and rich cultural experiences.

The itinerary samples below cover the most popular destinations in French Polynesia – Moorea and Bora Bora

Itinerary 1: Moorea

Moorea is a beautiful island a couple of hours’ sail from Tahiti. The scenery is spectacular – white sand beaches with a rugged mountain backdrop. The island offers beautiful snorkelling, various grades of hiking trails, and many cultural experiences.

Day 1: Arrival at Papeete (usually afternoon or early morning). Taxi to Marina Taina (approx. 45NZD – 3000 XPF). We will pick you up at Marina’s dock, or you can stay at the accommodation close to the airport.

Day 2: Sail over to Moorea
Anchoring outside Cooks Bay, water sports afternoon (snorkelling the reef, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc.…). Some of the most popular Moorea restaurants are in the area, as well as scooter and car rentals.

Day 3: Hiking to the viewpoint overlooking the Hilton hotel, juice and alcohol factory visit on the way back. The factory’s shop offers free tasting. Another option is hiring a scooter/car or joining a 4-wheel drive tour.

Day 4: Sail to Opunohu Bay, anchoring outside of the bay, water sports or hiking up the Magic Mountain and visiting the local markets (opportunity to buy souvenirs)

Day 5: Snorkeling with sharks and stingrays in Ha’apiti, drift snorkelling with sea turtles. Walk to the Tropical Garden – cafe, and souvenir shop with views of Opunohu Bay (cafe selling good ice cream, banana split, milkshakes, and beer on tap.

Day 6: Anchoring inside Opunohu Bay. Visiting Eco-Museum, several options for hiking from easy to challenging. Some of the options: walk to the viewpoint overlooking the island, walk through the pineapple plantation or to the Agriculture Lycee, where you can taste the yummy ice cream they make. Local taxis will be available to cut down the walking time. Dinner at Yacht Club – Friday and Saturday nights – free Polynesian fire dance performance.

Day 7:
Sail to the Vaiare area, anchor close to the Sofitel, snorkel, and do other water sports. Walk to the viewpoint above Sofitel, Happy hour at a beautiful Sofitel resort. Vairae Pizza has open stage nights on Friday.

Day 8: Sail back to Tahiti – Marina Taina. Option to take taxi or bus to the city (return bus ticket is 4.50NZD). Fly back that night or the next morning.

Itinerary 2: Bora Bora

Bora Bora is famous for its beautiful lagoon surrounded by sand-fringed motus. The crystal clear water with millions of shades of blue offers spectacular snorkelling and diving, exploring coral reefs with black tip sharks, stingrays, Manta rays and various coral fish. There are several good walks and hikes with amazing views across the island.

Day 1: Arrival to Papeete (usually afternoon or early morning).  Accommodation in Papeete or close to the airport.

Day 2: Flight  from Papeete to Bora Bora.

We will pick you up from Vaitape dock. Happy Hour at the Bora Bora Yacht Club (depending on the time of your arrival)

Day 3: Walk to the view point overlooking the lagoon with cannons which protected Bora Bora during Second World War (about 1 hour walk). Opportunity to hike to Phue and Pahia summits or do a 4 wheel drive tours, hire bike, scooter or car. Sail to the mooring next to To’opua motu.

Day 4: Snorkeling off the boat – sharks, stingrays and manta rays to be seen.

Day 5: Morning snorkeling, moving to the anchorage near Bloody Mary’s restaurant. Happy Hour at Bloody Mary’s.

Day 6: Sail to Taurere anchorage on the southwestern part of Bora Bora. Snorkeling and other water sports. Option to visit Coconut factory or organise BBQ on the motu.

Day 7: Dinghy trip north to go snorkeling with Manta Rays (there is a Manta Rays cleaning station)

Day 8: Sail back to the village to catch a flight back to Papeete.
